What to Do When & How Top |

Being a Pot-A-Plant volunteer takes no special skills or knowledge …
just an interest in making a memory. It’s all about human interaction. Before you begin your task, you will receive a verbal orientation as to what your actions and roles are. Below is an outline of this brief training. Most crucial is to remember you are there as a guide; the Olympians are to do the work when able. Each customer has different skills and needs, so you have to use your judgment on how much physical help they need. TOOLS: The components of the Pot-A-Plant “kit” are: 2” plant, empty 4” pot, plastic saucer, potting soil, cup of water, plastic bag, and labeled paper bag. METHOD: View a short demonstration Click Here 1. Place an empty 4” pot on top of the soil in the plastic liner; instruct the athlete on what he/she is going to do. 2. Help the athlete select a plant of his/her choice; engage him/her in conversation. 3. Have the athlete fill the pot with soil to about 1/3 full. 4. Have him/her gently squeeze the pot to loosen the soil and roots. 5. Have the athlete gently remove the plant from the pot. 6. Have him/her place the plant in the center of the new pot. 7. Hold the plant in place while he/she fills the pot with soil. 8. Hand the athlete a cup of water and have him/her pour a little on the soil. 9. Place the finished product in a plastic bag to control any water drips. 10. Place the plant and plastic bag into the appropriately labeled paper bag. It’s that simple … but very meaningful. In a small way, it is horticultural therapy in action! Top |
